Multibagger Stocks

These are stocks that provide you returns over your initial investment many times, like 2X, 5X, 10X, etc.  “One Up On Wall Street” is a famous book by Peter Lynch, in which he mentions the concept of multibagger stocks. Multibagger stocks are those that convert your little money into a fortune.

2-bagger:

  • Here, your investment doubles.
  • You invest ₹10,000, and it becomes ₹20,000.
  • That’s a 2-bagger. Good start initially.

10-bagger:

  • Here, your money grows 10 times.
  • ₹1 lakh becomes ₹10 lakh.
  • This is what serious wealth creation looks like.
  • Many high-growth stocks from 2010 became 10-baggers by 2020.

100-bagger:

  • The real jackpot.
  •  ₹50,000 becomes ₹50 lakh.
  • Rare, but companies like Eicher Motors and Page Industries have done this for patient investors.

Earnings Per Share (EPS):

  • The company’s profit is divided by the total shares.
  • High EPS indicates that the firm is doing well and making a profit.
  • Try to identify companies having consistent earnings growth in 3-5 years. ‘

CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate):

  • It refers to the annual average growth rate, compounded.
  • When an analyst says “CAGR of 20% in 5 years,” it means that your wealth grows by an average of 20% every year.
  • A very important parameter while identifying a multibagger stock.

ROE (Return on Equity):

  • Measures the profitability of a company relative to equity capital.
  • Anything above 15% ROE is decent.
  • High ROE indicates quality companies.

ROCE (Return on Capital Employed):

  • Reveals the efficiency with which the firm uses total capital invested in business operations.
  • Anything above 20% ROCE is a quality firm.

Promoter Holding:

  • Indicates shareholding in the firm by promoters/owners.
  • High promoter holding above 50% implies confidence in the company by its promoters.

Market Cap (Market Capitalisation):

  • Total value of the company’s shares.
  • Share price × Total shares = Market cap.
  • Small-cap stocks (under ₹5,000 crore) often have better multibagger chances but higher risk too.

Free Cash Flow:

  • Cash left after the company pays all expenses and investments.
  • Positive free cash flow means the company has real paisa, not just paper profits.

Operating Cash Flow:

  • Actual cash generated from business operations.
  • Good for checking if profits are real or just accounting tricks.

P/E Ratio (Price-to-Earnings):

  • Share price divided by EPS.
  • Shows how expensive a stock is.
  • Low P/E with high growth? Might be undervalued.
  • But don’t blindly chase low P/E, context matters.

Sales Growth:

  • How fast is the company’s revenue increasing year-over-year?
  • Consistent 15%+ sales growth is a solid sign for potential multibaggers.

PAT (Profit After Tax):

  • Net profit after all expenses and taxes.
  • This is the correct bottom line number.
  • Rising PAT over the years is what you want.

Survivorship Bias:

  • We only hear about stocks that became multibaggers.
  • Nobody talks about the 100 other stocks that failed.
  • Don’t assume every high-growth stock will succeed; many don’t survive.

Conclusion

Finding multibagger stocks is everyone’s dream, but understanding the right terms is your first step to success. Now you know what 2-bagger, 10-bagger, EPS, CAGR, ROE, and other key terms mean in simple language.

Remember these 3 things before investing:

  1. Don’t chase survivorship bias – Just because Page Industries became a 100-bagger doesn’t mean every stock will. Many fail.
  2. Look for fundamentals – High EPS growth, ROE above 15%, ROCE above 20%, and promoter holding above 50% are your green flags.
  3. Start small, think long-term – Multibagger stocks need patience. ₹10,000 can become ₹10 lakh, but it takes years.

Now you are ready to start reading stock reports and identifying potential multibaggers. Keep learning, stay patient, and invest smart. Your fortune could be in the next multibagger stock you find.
